In August 2023, my oldest daughter Loren was diagnosed with breast cancer. She started chemo in September. Then in January 2024, my middle daughter Mahryah was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. What an emotional roller coaster this was—having two daughters with cancer. Mahryah started chemo in February, and both girls had to shave their heads. I’m glad they had each other during this difficult time.
Loren had her double mastectomy in April, and Mahryah was continuing chemo. After Mahryah finished chemo, she had a PET scan that showed the mass was still present and had not responded to treatment. She had to start radiation immediately until she could get into IU Simon Cancer Center for further treatment.
Mahryah was contacted by CourtStrong to be a beneficiary at the annual golf scramble. We spent an amazing day at Boonville Golf Course harassing golfers and riding golf carts. It was one of the best days for both of my girls. During this time, I told CourtStrong about my other daughter having cancer too, and he made her a beneficiary. CourtStrong sent us on an amazing vacation to Gatlinburg.
Loren found out that she was cancer-free in November, which was amazing. Mahryah was still battling, and we spent 4 weeks at IU Simon Cancer Center, where she had CAR-T therapy. Mahryah has three boys, and being away from them was harder for her than having cancer. We spent 4 weeks in an off-campus apartment, and the boys were able to stay with her.
We had the best Christmas and spent lots of time together. In the middle of January, Mahryah became sick and spent 7 days in the hospital, where she took her last breath and went to be with her Lord and Savior. This is a daily struggle for all of us, but we have had amazing support from family, friends, and an incredible community.
I am so grateful for CourtStrong for all they have done. Who knew that would be our last vacation together—and it was an amazing one.
