About CourtStrong, Inc.
CourtStrong is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization based in Elberfeld, IN, founded in memory of Courtney Nelson. In 2015, Courtney was diagnosed with cancer, and during her courageous battle, the community rallied together to support the Nelson family. Through their generosity, funds were raised to send Courtney, Shon and their two young boys to Disney World, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.
Following Courtney’s passing in February 2017, Shon was inspired to pay forward the kindness his family received. CourtStrong, Inc. strives to support young families facing a cancer diagnosis, providing them with the opportunity to create lasting memories or fulfill bucket list wishes.
Through the generosity of donors and the strength of the community, CourtStrong continues to bring hope and joy to families during their most challenging times years after her passing.

CourtStrong, Inc. was founded on a simple but powerful principle: Pay it forward
Courtney Leigh Nelson (Barth), was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage IV adenocarcinoma of unknown primary in December 2015. She was young, vibrant and strong—a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished daughter, sister and friend. Her diagnosis left all that knew Courtney devastated, lost and searching for answers. Despite extensive testing and consultations with specialists from top cancer centers, her cancer’s origination site/organ was never discovered. Even with the odds against her, one thing was certain—Courtney was determined to fight.
She never sought pity or sympathy. Instead, she became an inspiration to everyone she encountered. Even in the face of unimaginable hardship, Courtney continued being the incredible mother and person that everyone loved. She never let cancer define her, nor did she allow the disease to dim the light she brought to the world. More than anything, she wanted to make the most of her time with her family, especially her two young sons.
Some of the most beautiful moments arise from the darkest times. Just days after her diagnosis, our family, friends and community came together to support us. Fundraisers were organized, meals arrived at our doorstep and countless cards, gifts and donations poured in. This outpouring of generosity continued through Courtney’s final day on February 19, 2017, and beyond.
Because of this kindness, Courtney and her family were able to create priceless memories together—camping trips, boating adventures, a visit to New York and most importantly, a family trip to Disney World. These experiences brought joy to Courtney and gave her some precious moments with her family, even amidst the difficulties we faced daily.
After Courtney’s passing, it became clear — these blessings must be paid forward. Courtney’s memory needed to last for all those that loved her. Other families facing the same struggles needed this same level of love and support. CourtStrong, Inc. was born out of these reasons and the desire to turn something incredibly horrific, into something eluding love, support, understanding and positivity.
CourtStrong, Inc. is dedicated to raising funds that allow families affected by cancer to focus on what truly matters—spending time together, creating memories and finding joy amidst hardship.
The organization works to alleviate financial burdens so that families never have to choose between medical expenses and making the most of their time together.
One of Courtney’s greatest joys during her battle was a golf outing organized in support of her family—an event she spoke about often in her final months. In her honor, this annual event remains CourtStrong’s primary fundraiser, bringing together people from all walks of life to support the cause and carry on Courtney’s legacy of strength and generosity.
At CourtStrong, no one fights alone. The organization is 100% volunteer-based, ensuring that nearly every dollar donated goes directly to a family battling cancer. Through its work, CourtStrong strives to provide families with the same love and support that made such a difference for Courtney and her loved ones.
